Let's start with a basic overview of SEO, as it relates to SEO backlinks and guest posting in general. First and foremost, I'll define what SEO is, and then I'll explain why most webmasters don't use it. The best SEO for your site is one that doesn't require much effort on your part and one that results in a steady stream of traffic and quality incoming links.

Having your site indexed by search engines is the first step to getting backlinks. In order to gain an indexable site you need to start by finding sites that have a good ranking themselves. These are known as anchor text websites (ASW) or "good authority sites" (GAS). To achieve a decent ASW ranking, you should use the three methods I outlined in my article "How to Get a Good Web 2.0 Profile and Domain Name".

Once you have found some ASW you can then start getting backlinks for your site. The easiest way to do this is to start a blog at WordPress.com, or blogger.com, and use content management system software like Joomla! and WordPress. There are many different packages for these types of applications and many allow you to automate your blogs. Some even allow you to automatically post to a feed to get you back links and improve your ranking on the search engines.

Once you have your blog up and running you can start building backlinks for your site. The easiest way to do this is to submit your RSS feed to several RSS directories. You can also submit to the general RSS feed directories, such as Feedburner, Bloglines and Technorati. If you prefer to submit directly to your blog instead of to the directory it's also fine.

Once you have submitted your RSS feed and your blog has received some initial backlinks you can now begin to make some actual content. The first step in SEO backlinks and guest posting is to make sure that your site has good content on it. People want to read articles need to be submitted. This allows you to build your online reputation and find you through Google if you so choose.

After you've established your online reputation by submitting your content to a few directories and by creating some good articles, you should start focusing on link building. As always, you should have your blog indexed by the search engines and submit your site to the directories you are submitting to.

Link Building can be done in a number of ways. The best way is to have a blog of your own, with good content and an RSS feed. Link building articles are submitted to those directories, and the author's site is indexed by the search engines. It's important to remember that when submitting your content, it should be relevant to the site you are submitting to, so don't submit anything to sites you don't own, or even to sites that aren't related to your niche.

Once you have your blog up and running and you have submitted your articles and blog posts to a few directories, you should start to plan out how you will go about writing guest posts. Guest blogging is one of the most important tools you will have as a website owner. The more posts you make the better and the more links you are able to obtain.
